Hexagon · Apex Session
Sustainability can sit uneasily between long-term ambition and the demands of daily business. At HxGN LIVE 2023, Apex Session approached that tension as a design challenge. Big Dreams helped create a live prototype for shared inquiry: an experience in which leaders, customers, employees, and investors could explore possibilities together.
Role: Research, strategic framing, participatory experience, and media.
2023 · HxGN LIVE
Apex Session at HxGN LIVE 2023 was conceived as a designed environment for shared inquiry.
The aim was not to deliver a finished answer to sustainability. It was to create conditions for a more useful conversation across teams, sectors, and roles. Emerging technologies, shifting priorities, and complex industrial systems made uncertainty unavoidable. The session needed to give participants enough structure to work with that uncertainty, while allowing different perspectives to meet without being reduced to a single message or a conventional presentation.
Facilitated dialogue, spatial storytelling, and participatory formats made abstract questions available for hands-on exploration. Two models helped ground the discussion. Marginal Gains considered how small improvements across tools, systems, and decisions can compound. The Adjacent Possible framed innovation as new combinations of resources already available. Together, these ideas gave participants ways to move between incremental action and broader possibility. The environment invited people to prototype their thinking, examine tensions, and develop language they could carry into later conversations. Printed material and media connected the live experience with a wider strategic account.

Micheal Cook presents on environmental change, offering a shared starting point for discussion.
The published case study connects Apex with more integrated sustainability narratives in Hexagon’s 2024 Sustainability Report, describing greater connection between business strategy, values, and commitments. These are the source’s reported effects, not independently measured findings here. The enduring proposition is methodological: a designed setting for collective inquiry can be adapted to future questions, rather than ending when the event closes.
