Amazon UX Lab
A connected home is more than a collection of devices. For Amazon UX Lab, Big Dreams explored how information and services might become part of everyday domestic life. Research-led scenarios placed emerging technology inside relatable human stories, asking what it should help people do, rather than what a new screen could display.
Role: Research, speculative design, scenario development, and visual storytelling.
Amazon UX Lab · Advanced concepts
A speculative kitchen scene explores information embedded in the surfaces and objects of a home.
As computing moves into furniture, objects, and architecture, the boundaries of an interface begin to dissolve. The challenge was to imagine this change without losing the qualities that make a home feel like home: rest, health, play, identity, and connection. Amazon’s advanced concept team wanted plausible visions for near-future displays and interaction, grounded in the needs and values of mainstream customers rather than technology for its own sake.
Big Dreams combined research into emerging technologies, market forces, and cultural trends with targeted user personas. The team developed guiding principles for domestic interaction and six questions for concept generation: could a house help us be better homeowners or caretakers, give us superpowers, reduce our dependence on screens, help us make more of each day, or express our identities? Answers took the form of detailed situational narratives and illustrated storyboards. Each connected a human situation with relevant trends, design principles, and underlying technologies, making an unfamiliar possibility easier to discuss.

Research and visual explorations from the published Amazon UX Lab study.
The exercise gave Amazon research-based stories to inform conversations about future product opportunities. It explored the utility and value of ambient services before committing to a particular device or implementation. These are speculative scenarios, not accounts of products launched or measured customer outcomes. Their role was to make possible experiences tangible enough to question, compare, and develop.
